Continually demonstrating its commitment to the schools of Bahrain, the Bahrain Teachers College, in deep cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Quality Assurance Authority for Education and Training, opened in October 2018 a regional center of research and practice excellence, the key mission of which, building on best practice in Bahrain and internationally, is to ensure that school leaders are given the support necessary to improve the quality of their schools. An internationally-recognized model of school leadership coaching will be implemented, such that leaders in schools considered by the Quality Assurance reviews to be inadequate will be given direct and intensive support with the intention of turning their schools around.
Such a center is yet another indication of just how deeply connected the Bahrain Teachers College is to the schools it serves. The center feeds knowledge from its activities back into the College for the purposes of curriculum revision and research. Once again, Bahrain is leading the way in educational improvement.
As Bahrain seeks to understand the challenge it faces with regard to school quality and performance, it recognizes that there is no more effective strategy than to improve the quality and performance of its school leaders. For this reason, the Leadership Center is a new and exciting initiative that blends teaching, research, educational practice, and development. The result is be a symbiotic relationship between research and practice that contributes to short-term gains in school quality and long-term gains in leadership development. This center demonstrates the power of practice to academia, and the impact of scholarly academic work to professional practice. It provides a continuous feedback loop between practice, practice improvement, evaluation, policy, research, and university education.
Mission & Vision
A regional center of research and practice excellence, the key mission of which, building on best practice in Bahrain and internationally, is to ensure that school leaders are given the support necessary to improve the quality of their schools. School quality is a function of leadership, and good leadership is carefully cultivated through academic learning, practical mentorship, collaborative dialogue, and encouraging support. Such activities, as well as thoughtful research on the impact of specific activities, should feed back into the curriculum of the BTC so that all future leaders are properly equipped.
The Center focuses on providing high quality in-service training, mentorship, and targeted support for current principals, assistant principals, and senior teachers; it develops future school leaders; and it promotes school transformation by providing direct support to leadership teams. The work of the Center is aligned with the current ELP program and the planned masters degree in Educational Leadership. All work results in research on leadership development, school improvement, and leadership coaching. In particular, it generates specific procedures, processes, policies, curricula, and coaching models to influence school quality both through direct efforts and post-graduate preparation.
